Privacy Policy

Version 2.0 · Last updated October 21, 2026

Black Owned is operated by One Toronto Entertainment, based in Toronto, Canada ("Black Owned", "we", "us"). This policy explains, in plain language, what we collect, why we collect it, who we share it with, and the choices you have.

1. Who is responsible for your information

One Toronto Entertainment operates the Black Owned app and website and decides how personal information collected through Black Owned is used. That makes us the organization responsible for it under Canada's federal privacy law (PIPEDA). You can reach us about privacy at any time at privacy@blackownedapp.ca.

2. What we collect

  • Account information — your email address and a hashed (scrambled and unreadable) version of your password. We never store your password in plain text.
  • Profile information — the name, photos, bio, heritage, languages, role or title, interests, prompts, and other details you add to your profile.
  • Business details — your business name, industry, the services you offer, and the links you add (website, social accounts).
  • Let's Work data — service profiles you publish, the skills, rates, and availability you list, job posts you create, work agreements between members, and the ratings and reviews you give or receive.
  • Promotions data — the offers and promo codes you publish, and analytics about promotions such as views, code copies, call-to-action taps, and other click or view activity.
  • Messages — the messages, voice notes, photos, and media you send through Black Owned, and whether a conversation has been opened.
  • Location — only when you enable it. We use the location you allow (such as your city or approximate area) to show members and businesses near you. You can turn it off in your device or browser settings at any time, and the app keeps working.
  • Device and usage data — device type, browser and operating system, general region derived from your IP address, and how you use the app (pages visited, features used, errors).

We don't ask for, and don't want, sensitive information such as health information, government ID numbers, or banking details. Please don't put that in your profile, your listings, or your messages.

3. Why we use it

  • To run your account and the app — signing you in, saving and showing your profile and content.
  • Matching and networking — recommending members, businesses, and work opportunities that fit what you're looking for.
  • The business directory and search — making businesses, services, and members findable.
  • Let's Work — connecting members who want to hire with members who offer services, and keeping the agreements, ratings, and reviews between them.
  • Promotions — displaying paid placements, measuring how they perform, and reporting results to the business that bought them.
  • Safety and moderation — investigating reports, blocking abusive accounts, enforcing our Terms, and keeping fraud and harmful content out of the community.
  • Support and service messages — answering your questions and sending essential notices about your account (for example a new message, a security notice, or a change to the service).
  • Legal and fraud prevention — complying with the law and protecting members, the public, and Black Owned.

We may also use aggregated or de-identified data — data that can't reasonably identify you — to understand how Black Owned is used and to improve it.

4. Who we share it with

We never sell your personal information. We share it only in these situations:

  • With other members, as you intend. Your profile, business details, service listings, job posts, ratings, and messages are shown to the members you interact with, and your public profile or business listing is visible to other signed-in members.
  • Service providers who run the app. Companies that provide our hosting, databases, media storage, email delivery, payments, and analytics. They may only use the data to provide their service to us.
  • Payment processing. If you buy a promotion or a boost, our payment provider processes your payment details. We don't see or store your full card number.
  • Legal, safety, and rights. Where the law requires it, or where we believe in good faith it's necessary to respond to a legal request, prevent fraud or abuse, protect someone's safety, or defend our rights. This includes reporting child sexual abuse material as described in our Child Safety Standards.
  • Business changes. If Black Owned or One Toronto Entertainment is involved in a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, information may transfer as part of that deal. We'll tell you before your information becomes subject to a different privacy policy.
  • With your consent. Any other sharing happens only when you ask for it.

5. How long we keep it

We keep your personal information while your account is active. When you delete your account, we delete your profile, your photos, your messages, and the rest of your personal content — except records the law requires us to keep (for example billing records for a promotion purchase, or records needed to handle a safety report, a complaint, or a legal claim) and except copies still held in encrypted backups, which are purged on their normal cycle.

We also keep the limited information needed to stop a banned member from simply re-registering.

6. Your rights and choices

  • Access — you can see your information in your profile and settings at any time. Ask us for a copy of anything you can't see.
  • Correction — edit your profile, business details, and Let's Work listings yourself whenever you want.
  • Deletion — delete your account in the app: Settings → Account → Delete account. If you can't sign in, email privacy@blackownedapp.ca and we'll action the request. See Delete your account.
  • Location — turn it off in your device settings, or don't grant it in the first place.
  • Notifications and messages — control email notifications in Settings.
  • Withdraw consent, or complain — you can contact us to withdraw consent for optional uses, and you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (priv.gc.ca). We'd rather hear from you first, so we can fix it.

We'll respond to requests within the time set by applicable law (generally 30 days in Canada). To protect you, we may ask you to confirm that you control the account before we act.

7. Cookies and local storage

We use cookies and your browser's local storage for essential things: keeping you signed in, remembering your language and settings, and measuring basic usage so we can find and fix problems. We don't use them to build advertising profiles about you or to sell your data to third parties. You can clear or block cookies in your browser, but parts of the app — including signing in — may stop working.

8. How we protect it

We use industry-standard safeguards, including encrypted connections (HTTPS), hashed passwords, access controls, and monitoring for abuse. No system is perfectly secure, so please use a strong, unique password and report anything suspicious to privacy@blackownedapp.ca.

9. Adults only

Black Owned is an 18+ service. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18, and we close and remove accounts we learn belong to a minor. Our Child Safety Standards explain our zero-tolerance approach to child sexual abuse material and how to report it.

10. Where your information is processed

We and our service providers may store and process information in Canada, the United States, and other countries. Where information crosses a border, we use contractual and other safeguards appropriate to how sensitive the information is.

11. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the app or the law changes. When we do, we update the version and date at the top of this page, and for significant changes we tell you in the app or by email. Continuing to use Black Owned after an update means you accept the updated policy.
